The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (DFLL) of National Taiwan University announces 2009-2010 faculty positions:I. General requirements: Except otherwise specified, minimum requirements include a Ph.D in a job-related field, a strong publication record, and 3 years of teaching at the college level. All fulltime faculty members are required to teach service courses such as writing, conversation, and Freshman English and are obligated to direct theses and serve on various university and department committees and as mentors. You may also be assigned courses in the Evening Division. Some knowledge of Chinese and experience teaching in a Chinese-speaking environment a plus.
II. Openings:
Track One—English and American literature. 2 fulltime positions:
Additional requirements:
must be able to teach introductory and general literature survey courses
Specialties sought:
Medieval to 17th-century English literature
Victorian English literature
American literature (General)
20th-century American literature
Special themes or authors/genres
Track Two—European Languages. 2 positions:
Additional requirements:
Ph.D preferred (except for Russian—see below) but not absolutely necessary (non-Ph.D holders will be hired as lecturers)
Minimum 3 years of language teaching experience
Ability to teach more than one European language and culture courses a plus
Positions available:
1 fulltime Russian (Ph.D in Russian literature, linguistics or related fields required)
1 fulltime Spanish (native speakers preferred)
Track Three—Linguistics. 1 fulltime position:
Additional requirements:
must be able to teach Introduction to Linguistics and general linguistics courses
Specialty sought:
History of English Language
Track Four—TESOL or Applied Linguistics. 1 fulltime position:
Additional requirements:
must be able to coordinate English teacher training programs
Track Five—Translation and Interpretation:
Additional requirements:
Ph.D preferred but may be substituted by professional experience (non-Ph.D holders will be hired as project-funded lecturers or specialists)
minimum 3 years of translation and/or interpretation experiences for Ph.D holders, 6 years for non Ph.D holders
Specialties sought:
1 fulltime SI and CI (English-Chinese both ways)
1 part-time literary translation
1 part-time practical translation
III. Salary and Ranks: commensurate with qualifications. Initial salaries range approximately from 70,000NT (ca. 2,300US; subject to exchange rates) for assistant professors to 90,000 (ca. 3,000US) for full professors per month with regular teaching load (8 hours per week for full professors, 9 for associate and assistant professors). Additional teaching hours and administrative assignments extra. Other benefits include family health insurance, research grants and awards (on a competitive basis), and university housing (long waiting list).

Appointment begins on August 1, 2009.
